Itinerary Overview
Our Nyiragongo package is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of hiking the stunning Nyiragongo Volcano in Virunga National Park, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in 2 days/one night. At 11,385 feet above sea level, this Volcano is the second lowest but what makes it stand out is the fact that it is one of the most active Volcanoes (last eruption being in May 2021) as well as featuring the World’s largest Lava Lake of about 200 meters across. This trip starts and ends from Goma Town and the Crater of Nyiragongo is not all to expect but also leopards, forest elephants, duikers, forest buffaloes, Mongoose, chimpanzees, genets, Kobs and civets among others.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer To Mount Nyiragongo Base, Via Grande Barriere Border Crossing
Hikers for Mount Nyiragongo are expected at Grande Barriere Border crossing early in the morning (by 6:00am) to finalize check-in at the Tourism Office by 8:00am. This office is just adjacent to the passport office and while here, you will be issued with the hiking permit. This will be required at the briefing point prior to beginning the hike. Continue to Kibati Ranger Post for the actual briefing and later kick-start the hike to summit of Mount Nyiragongo.
Visitors begin ascending by 10:00am and reach at the summit after four to six hours, but don’t expect an easy hike with five phases of varying terrains as well as levels of difficulty. Camping and dinner is at the summit shelters after relishing views and photography at the rim of the World’s largest Lava Lake.
Day 2: Descending Mount Nyiragongo And Drop-Off At Grande Barriere
After a cold night at the summit shelters, be treated to a sumptuous breakfast and begin descending back to Kibati Ranger Post by 6:00am. Just like ascent, several animals and bird species will be encountered along the way while descending. On getting to the bottom, appreciate your hiking crew as well as porters by tipping, and then meet the driver for transfer to Goma Town. This sadly brings our Nyiragongo package to an end.
