Overview
With only 4 days, you stand a chance to encounter the massive mountain gorillas in the wild twice. The double gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park includes 2 days of ultimate mountain gorilla experience and you will visit 2 different groups each offering distinct experiences.
Located Southwest of Uganda, Bwindi shelters 20 habituated gorilla groups and these are all open for gorilla trekking. The park’s boundaries stretch up to 321sq.kms and it was established as a Park in 1991 inhabiting about 120 mammal species, 360 bird species, tree and plant species, colorful butterflies, reptiles and others.
The double gorilla safari in Bwindi will focus on any of the 4 sectors: Nkuringo, Rushaga, Buhoma and Ruhija in the East. The 20 habituated gorilla families all exist in the 4 regions and they include among others Mucunguzi group, Katwe, Nkuringo, Christmas, Bitukura gorilla group, Rushegura, Mubare gorilla family, Rwigi, Bikingi family, Kyaguriro, Bushaho group, Kutu group, Kahungye and Busingye gorilla family. You will start and end your Bwindi double gorilla trekking tour in Kampala.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Gorilla Safari to Bwindi
Bwindi is located in the Southwestern side of Uganda and after breakfast in a hotel in Kampala, you will drive for about 8-9 hours to this park. Take Kampala-Masaka- Mbarara- Kabale route which comes with lots of stopover areas including the Equator crossing where you will be taking pictures or perform a water experiment; Igongo cultural centre for the en-route lunch and finally drop off at a lodge in Bwindi for evening refreshments, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Uganda Gorilla Trekking-Bwindi NP
Early rise, then enjoy breakfast and after, assemble at Rushaga, Buhoma, Nkuringo or Ruhija for briefing about Bwindi gorilla trekking guidelines. Allocation of gorilla families will also be performed during briefing and you will begin your adventure as soon as you step foot to tropical forest of Bwindi.
To see mountain gorillas, you should be prepared to spend 2-6 hours which covers 1 hour of face to face encounter and photography. Mountain gorillas are generally large and you will be amazed by their size, take as many gorilla pictures as you and have something to share with your dear ones on getting back home. Tracking gorillas takes energy meaning you should be fit enough and that is why a pack of snacks, water shouldn’t omit on your packing list. After a close encounter with gorillas, a gorilla trekking certificate will be provided when you return from the forest. The evening may include visit to Batwa cultural village- meet the Batwa pygmies’/forest keepers or remain at the hotel to relax.
Day 3: Bwindi gorilla tracking- second time
Have a hefty breakfast, after leave your respective accommodation for briefing once again and make sure that you go with some pack of lunch, a bottled water. This is to keep you fit all through your gorilla trek that often takes 2-6 hours less or more. You will be visiting the different family of mountain gorillas or the previous and the sector you will be tracking will be determined by the gorilla permit. Return to have lots of refreshment in the evening, dinner and a night sleep at the lodge (budget, mid-range or moderator, luxury gorilla safari lodge) that was previous booked.
Day 4: Exit Bwindi Impenetrable Forest- Kampala
An early morning cup of tea or coffee be enjoyed in the morning then start the return trip after you have checked out of the accommodation. Returning to Kampala will take you 8-9 hours to drive and you will be using a 4x4 vehicle.
